We live on a relatively small island surrounded by water that occasionally gets very angry. Despite that, some of us feel compelled to live by the water. We feel at home near the sea. Maybe that goes a long, long way back to the time when we emerged from the primeval swamp. We learn to live with the tides - when there is full water and when the tide goes to the back of the end, as one granddaughter, then aged three, explained.
